Gather Your Materials

One in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the time they turn 70. Over 90% of nonmelanoma skin cancers occur due to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. By learning how to tint car windows, you can reduce your risk of developing nonmelanoma skin cancer.

In order to protect yourself, you'll first need to gather the necessary materials.

You'll need:

  • Window tint
  • A razor knife or blade
  • A scraper blade
  • Lint-free cleaning clothes
  • Film application solution

You can also use a squeegee and heat gun to smooth out the edges of your film, remove air bubbles, and ensure adhesion.

Your Car Tint

The auto window tint is the most important item on your list. It's important to read over the tint manufacturer's instructions for applying the film. They'll also provide maintenance tips to help improve the lifespan of your car tint.

Before you purchase your window tint, make sure to research your state or city laws. These laws will regulate how dark you can tint your car windows. They'll also determine how reflective your tint is allowed to appear.

Make sure to review these laws before you purchase the tint.

You'll also want to decide on the type of window tint you want. These can include:

  • Dyed
  • Metalized
  • Hybrid
  • Ceramic

These window tints are often available with different tint application methods as well. Make sure to choose the application option that's easiest for you.

The Tinting Process

Before learning how to tint car windows, make sure to wash your windows.

Use your lint-free cleaning cloth and remove any particles that are stuck to the glass. Next, wet the outside of your window using the application solution. Roll out the film tint with the car window liner side facing you.

Then, cut the outline of the film into the shape of your car window. Add at least a fourth of an inch from the window gasket and borders.

Try to squeegee out any bunching areas or bubbles away.

Then, peel off the liner from the tint using masking tape. Once you have the tint in hand, spray the interior of the car window and apply the tint.

Use your squeegee to remove any remaining bubbles and streaks and you're good to go!
